Haiti Earthquake - 1 Year Update
As we approach the anniversary of the horrific earthquake that shook Haiti nearly a year ago, I am so grateful for the generosity of donors like you. Our collective response last year saved many lives. Thank you. As you well know, the challenges in Haiti did not cease when the ground stopped shaking. On a daily basis over the last year, American Red Cross relief workers have been providing critical aid in Haiti.
Many of you have contacted us with thoughtful questions about how our work is going and what the situation is like on the ground right now. How has the American Red Cross responded to the cholera outbreak? How much money has been spent and what will be done with the remaining funds?
Read our Haiti One-Year Report for the latest news, stories and updates: http://american.redcross.org/site/R?i=Vd-6_PjMd_0O38gmnuVj1A Much of what we did in the last year was to help sustain people with food, water, and medical care as we began to build more permanent shelters and badly needed infrastructure like water and sanitation systems.
The Red Cross provided food and clean, drinkable water to hundreds of thousands of people, funded a vaccination campaign that inoculated one million people against deadly diseases, and made available funds to help two critical hospitals keep their doors open. And our work continues.
As we move forward, our work will focus on rebuilding lives and helping the Haitian people prepare for future disasters. We’ve already started construction on transitional homes and through the global Red Cross network have plans to build enough to house 150,000 people.
The challenges are great, but the determination of the Haitian people, the support of our donors, and the dedication of our relief workers all give me great hope for Haiti’s future.
And none of this would be possible without your tremendous support. Thank you.
All the best, Gail McGovern
