Letter From The First Lady

All of us are aware of the terrible crime of domestic violence. And whether we know it or not, many of us have friends or family members who have been victims themselves. As First Lady, I have had the opportunity to visit with victims of domestic violence in shelters across the state. And as these individuals struggle to regain control of their lives, shelters struggle to provide the simple necessities that most of us take for granted, like canned food, soap and diapers.

This is why I am asking for your help. “Shop and Share Day” is Saturday, Feb. 5, at Kroger locations across the state. We are still looking for volunteers to help collect donated items at Kroger stores between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers will be given a list of items that are needed for shelters and bins for the items being collected. To sign up for a time, visit the volunteer sign-up page: http://firstlady.ky.gov/shopshare.htm.

I would like to thank all of you who have already volunteered your time to help with “Shop and Share Day.” Just a few hours of your time can have a positive impact on the lives of domestic violence victims. Also, as you do your weekly shopping, please consider donating items for this important cause.

First Lady Jane Beshear Recruits Volunteers for Third Annual Shop & Share Drive

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 13, 2011) – In collaboration with the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association (KDVA), the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Kentucky Commission on Women and the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, First Lady Jane Beshear is encouraging Kentuckians to volunteer for and contribute to the annual “Shop and Share Day” on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011. “Shop and Share Day” is a one-day drive to provide much-needed resources to domestic violence shelters, which support victims and their children.

The goods drive is held at Kroger stores across Kentucky. Each store provides a list of items needed at the shelters, such as canned foods, toilet paper and soap, and has a bin to collect the donated goods. In addition, Kroger stores will be collecting monetary donations at each checkout line. Mrs. Beshear initiated “Shop and Share Day” after visiting several shelters and meeting their residents across the state. The monetary drive began Oct. 15 and has so far raised more than $4,000.

“During the cold, snowy winter months, many of us look forward to retreating to a safe, welcoming home. However, there are many who do not have that comfort, many for whom home is a place of violence and terror. Domestic violence affects thousands of families and individuals across Kentucky,” said Mrs. Beshear. “I encourage citizens to volunteer for ‘Shop and Share Day’ and show their support for the many women, men and children who suffer from domestic violence.”

Volunteers are needed to help collect donated items at Kroger stores between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. They will be given a list of items that are needed for shelters and bins for the items being collected. To sign up for a time, visit the volunteer sign-up page: http://firstlady.ky.gov/shopshare.htm. The deadline to volunteer is Jan. 21, 2011.

The previous “Shop and Share Day” was held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009. The drive had overwhelming success with estimated donations of more than $200,000, including both goods and monetary contributions.

The First Lady’s office is joined by the KDVA, Kroger, Drug Court, the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the Kentucky Commission on Women in organizing “Shop and Share Day.”

The KDVA was founded in 1981 and is a coalition of Kentucky’s 15 domestic violence programs providing services to victims of domestic violence and their children. Its purpose is to provide mutual support, information, resource sharing and technical assistance; to coordinate statewide services; and to advocate collectively on behalf of victims of domestic violence.

For more information, please visit http://firstlady.ky.gov/shopshare.htm. You may also call the First Lady’s office at 502-564-2611 or the KDVA at 502-209-5382.
